A woman who uses a matchmaking service to connect her with ability matches around the world is known as a mail-order wedding. Countless people may find the operation weird and absurd, but for some it is a way of life that allows them to escape poverty and establish a new life for themselves and their people.
The idea of a mail-order bride dates back to the American frontier of the 19th century when lonely men in the west sought wives through personal ads in newspapers and magazines. If the woman wanted to marry the man sight unseen, he would pay for her to travel from her home country (typically Asia or the male-deprived eastern united states ) to her home country (usually Asia ).
Even though there are fewer foreign-born women becoming mail-order brides than there once, this practice continues today. Despite all of this, mail-order brides continue to face a real threat of violence. A number of instances of domestic abuse have been documented, and some have reported being physically or emotionally abused by their husbands.
The Violence against women Act of 2019 (vawa ) is currently up for discussion in Congress and needs to be updated to include the necessary safeguards for mail order bride brides. However, preventing any kind of abuse against any woman is a crucial goal that can be attained by providing better education to those seeking such relationships and by raising the standard of care offered to them.
